Behind the Bench: Juris AI: Pitfalls, Practice Tips, and Potential Punishments
Artificial intelligence is increasingly used by the legal professions or legal research, drafting, and case management. While it has proven to be an efficient tool, improper or unexamined use has resulted in violations of Rules of Professional Responsibility and the imposition of court sanctions. The Panel, featuring judges and practitioners, will examine the expanding role of generative AI in court practice and the risks that it presents. The discussion will focus on recent cases in which reliance on AI tools has led to fabricated citations, inaccurate legal analysis, failures of supervision, and violation of not only Bankruptcy Rules but also rules imposing a duty of competence and candor to the tribunal.
