Hon. L. Jefferson Davis

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit has appointed L. Jefferson Davis, IV as U.S. Bankruptcy Judge for the District of South Carolina, with a duty station in Charleston. Judge Davis took the oath of office on September 9, 2024. An investiture ceremony will be held on a later date.

Judge Davis is a graduate of Winthrop University (B.A., 1999) and a cum laude graduate of the University of South Carolina School of Law (J.D., 2002).  He practiced bankruptcy law for three years before joining the Court in 2005 as a career law clerk for Judge John E. Waites (ret.).  He has served the Court and the bankruptcy bar through his dedicated public service for over 19 years, moving to the position of Chief Deputy Clerk in 2008 and Acting Clerk of Court from 2012-2013.  In August 2022, he was selected as Clerk of Court. Judge Davis will fill the vacancy that occurred when Judge David R. Duncan retired on May 31, 2023.
